Part 1 · Week 2: The Fear of the Lord (Beginning of Wisdom)
Day 8 of 365
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." - Proverbs 9:10 (NIV)
When we hear "fear of the Lord," we might picture a cosmic killjoy waiting to zap us for stepping out of line. But the Hebrew word for fear, *yirah*, is more about awe, reverence, and respect. It's the kind of feeling you get when you're standing on the edge of the Grand Canyon, or when you see a massive wave rolling in at Blacks. It's a recognition of something so much bigger and more powerful than yourself. For a leader, a father, and a husband, this kind of "fear" isn't about being scared; it's about being grounded. It’s understanding that our strategic plans and futuristic ideas are at their best when they are built on the foundation of God's timeless wisdom. It’s the starting point for making decisions that have eternal significance, not just quarterly returns.
Lord, help me to see you in your awesome power and majesty. Replace my fear of failure and the opinions of others with a healthy, reverent fear of You. Let this be the foundation of my wisdom in my home, my business, and my life. Amen.
Take 10 minutes today to go somewhere you can see the vastness of creation (the ocean, a hilltop). Reflect on God's power and your place in His world.
